There’s is no “better” – use what is appropriate.
- Photoshop is for creating raster (pixel based) elements and editing photos. Since websites are still mostly raster it’s used in Web Designing. If you set the document to 300 DPI you could use it for print design although it’s not the best tool for that.
- Illustrator is for designing vector elements (logos, flat art, line drawings). You can design pages in it but it seems to be meant for creating elements to be embedded in pages. Smaller design projects such as business cards seem okay to create in Illustrator but if you are looking to design a full or multi-page document it’s not the best tool.
- InDesign is for laying out multi-page documents (like books and multi-page PDFs) – you layout the overall page and embed the vector and raster elements created in Illustrator & Photoshop. InDesign gives you better control of text flow, formatting, and the spacing of individual elements – it’s like Microsoft Word but with better precision.
Which is better? It depends what kind of project you’re working on. Learn all 3 and their various strengths and weaknesses they are tools and each one is “best” for certain things not everything.
You could design your resume using Excel – it doesn’t mean it’s the right tool for the job.
